2012-04-16 Rijeka, day 16

It's already 8 o'clock and I haven't had dinner yet so I decided to bring you guys with me to the restaurant haha. So I am typing the beginning of this blog post as I am waiting for my food (I'm quite proud of my efficiency, no time wasted!)

We are in a new location today, a city called Rijeka, right by the sea. The bus ride went very well, it's only 2 hours and a half from Zagreb so it went by very quickly, I also chatted a little bit with my bus neighbour, that helped too. She was a little bit strange though but that's ok :)

The view during the drive was not extremely interesting if I remember properly (hard to tell since I was either talking or half asleep) but I did notice when we got close to Rijeka that the view was breathtaking! I took a few pictures but they don't look as nice as what I saw. We were on the road and we were almost looking at a fjord right by the window (without the water), and then all of a sudden there was a city (part of Rijeka I think) which seems to be built out of the mountain... It's a little bit hard to explain but it was very nice to see!

When I arrived in Rijeka, the sun was shining but it didn't last long :( It was funny how it happened though, I owe my lucky star a big one today! Usually around noon it's time for me to eat lunch, but for some reason I decided to keep walking for a little while and take more pictures before eating. It was about 1:15 when I finally decided I was really hungry and stopped in a restaurant. I had been sitting for 5 minutes then I looked out the window, and it was pouring rain outside! If I had stayed out just 5 minutes longer I would have been soaked! And if I had decided to eat earlier, I wouldn't have been able to continue taking pictures anyways because it was raining way too hard. So this was excellent timing, I was enjoying my lunch while the rain was falling and by the time I was done, it was not pouring anymore, just a few droplets that didn't bother me too much.

I like Rijeka a lot, it's fairly small (population 128 000) but somehow the downtown area is full of people, even on a Monday afternoon like today. There are a lot of areas that are for pedestrians only and the city is right by the water so the view from the quay is very nice (although I must admit that today the clouds were hiding most of it haha, but I'm sure in the summer it's amazing!)

View from the quay:

And here are a few more pictures of the city:

I thought I had seen most of what there was to see when I suddenly found out that Rijeka too has an awesome church!

It's always nice to see these beautiful churches especially when it's not expected :)

Here is a statue that really made me laugh because I looked at it quickly and I thought it was a hockey player! Of course not, I forgot one more time that I was in Croatia, not Canada!

And I like this picture because it shows that the sun is shining on those buildings but the sky is sooooo threatening!

I'm already done for today! Be safe my friends, I miss you all! Don't have too much fun without me! ;)
