As I told you yesterday, I left Rijeka early this morning and took the bus all the way to Pula, which is part of the "Istria" region of Croatia. It's interesting because every time I go to a different region, it almost seems like I'm in a new country. I'll expand on that a little later!
I was planning to catch up on some sleep on the bus because I keep going to bed late and waking up early, but I started looking at the scenery and it was so amazing pretty much all the way that I couldn't sleep! I tried to take a few pictures but they were not as good as reality, because somehow there's a beautiful view in front of me so I press on the button to take a picture but there's ALWAYS a stupid tree that jumps in front of me and blocks all the view right when I snap the shot. I swear it happens every time!! Anyways I was still able to take at least two good shots so here they are:
As I was saying earlier, I feel like I have crossed to a diffent country. Pula gives a feeling of extremely old age (but mostly well preserved), much more than any other city I've been to so far. There is a also a clear influence from Italians here. Which is good because that means I'm allowed to eat pasta since it is the local food! The streets look like they've been walked on since the existence of the Earth haha:
I like those old looking streets a lot! However most of the other things to see in Pula are also just as old and honestly they are not as impressive to me as what I've seen in other places...
... except, of course, for the highlight of Pula: The amphitheatre!!
I took millions of pictures so let me share a few with you:
Sorry I know I showed you too many pictures of the same thing but believe me, I have at least 10 times more haha. I think I overdid it, but I'm really impressed by this amphitheatre!
In one afternoon I was pretty much able to see everything that there is to see in Pula but I am staying here 3 nights because I decided to make Pula my starting point for 2 other excursions in different cities tomorrow and the day after.
Even though there isn't that much to see here, I definitely would recommend this city to a visitor who has lots of time in Croatia, just for the amphitheatre. It is so unbelievable for a North American person such as myself to see an amphitheatre right in the middle of a city. This one was built between 27 BC and 68 AD, and most of it is still standing today. 2000 years later! I'm completely amazed!
Pula is also by the water but the view of the sea doesn't look quite as nice as Rijeka, I think because of the industrial stuff all over the place and it also does not have the nice far away mountains that we could see from Rijeka. However the window of my bedroom is facing the water so I thought I would share the view that I have with you:
I'm not sure why but every time I spoke in Croatian today I was highly successful, there was 3 different people who gave me congratulations, my colleague Angelka would have been so proud of me :)
And my closing remark: it's funny because earlier I "complained" that I was too lazy to translate all the Croatian signs I see to English. Here they have provided translations! Unfortunately it is in Italian and so I still don't understand haha
