I love technology so much :) Thanks to the free Wifi in most cities in Croatia, I am able to write this blog post as I am watching the sunset in Zadar, which is apparently the most beautiful sunset in the world according to Alfred Hitchcock. I don't know many other sunsets so I will have to trust his word. I guess I look a little silly with my laptop with the nice scenery around me because there are 2 French ladies who just "tsk tsk"-ed at me but oh well, I don't think I'll ever see these people again.
Today I wanted to see the main sights of Zadar and there aren't that many so I took it very easy and very slowly. I started with a little walk by the water, seems like most cities in the Balkan I've been to have one:
Here is a medley of things to see in Zadar. First of all, more narrow streets:
An arch.
Useless fact of the day, the words "arch" and "onion" are the same in Croatian (I suppose it's the case in Serbian as well): "Vuk". But the "u" in onion is a short one while in arch it's a long one. You will be perfectly bilingual when you're done with my blog ;)
Here is the Trg Pet Bunara ("five wells" square)
Churches:
You can go all the way up in the tower next to the last church (Church of St-Donat), and here's the view from there:
Zadar is most famous for it's sea organ, here is the description from Wikipedia:
The Sea organ is an architectural object located in Zadar, Croatia and an experimental musical instrument which plays music by way of sea waves and tubes located underneath a set of large marble steps. The waves create somewhat random but harmonic sounds. The device was made by the architect Nikola Bašić as part of the project to redesign the new city coast (Nova riva), and the site was opened to the public on 15 April 2005.
Unfortunately I don't have any pictures from that but it's very interesting to hear. Based on all the comments I had seen on the Internet, I was expecting something magnificient but really I didn't think it was that awesome. The idea is great and I'd love to have one in Ottawa but I wouldn't say that it's worth stopping in Zadar just for that. Good thing there are other things to see here. There is also solar pannels that apparently release light at night and I must admit that I haven't seen that part because I'm too lazy to go back now that we're after dark :) Maybe tomorrow!
I was in my hostel a bit earlier today when I heard lots of noise coming from outside so I came downstairs and I saw this:
I took many more videos but I'm showing you this one because it's the only one where I understand a little bit :) I know they say "we'll see each other, we'll hear each other, today is a beautiful day, today is the most beautiful day!" And that's pretty much the only thing I understood from the whole concert which lasted about 20 minutes. It's better than nothing!
And just in case you were wondering what the best sunset on Earth looks like, here it is:
Enjoy the rest of your day while I go to bed!
Ok, one more picture before I go!
