Little disappointment this morning I must admit! My hostel has a breakfast included so I was really excited since I'm getting a little tired of the bureks (oh how I miss you Vector cereals!) But look at what was waiting for me on the table this morning:
Bread and butter! Yay! (this was a sarcastic yay by the way). I should have sticked to my bureks :)
At least my hostel was kind enough to rent a bike to me today, so I didn't have to walk super far to go get one. If you remember, the plan was to go discover the "Olive trail" where there is lots of information about olives and olive oil production. According to the bike path map given to me at the turistički informacije (I'm teaching you some Croatian here), the trails are supposed to be marked every 30 - 50m or so, less frequently when it's not necessary. The thing is, I think the marks didn't survive during the winter and they didn't bother to redo them yet... The paths looked something like this:

So we're surrounded by rock walls (which is really cool by the way, those were all man made by the inhabitants of the island way back when to clear the way so that they could grow something on the island, in this case, olive trees). But the problem is that every 200m or so there's a new path that appeared in front of me so there are often several possible directions which are most of the time not marked or with a mark that's half erased so it's unsure whether it's a mark or not.
Anyways, there were big boards with information about the olive stuff, there was 10 of them and each board had a marking to say which one it was. I somehow managed to make it to board #7. Sometimes it was a bit hard to manage by bike:

But most of the time it was doable although I would almost qualify the ride as extreme bicycle due to the enormous amount of rocks that were teaming up together to try to make me fall.
After board #7, I did what I had to do several times which is leave my bike behind to explore ahead to ensure I was in the right direction. Unfortunately I took too many turns and I got completely lost, I had no idea how to go back to my bike! I managed to somehow find it but I decided to give up on the Olive trail since I had biked for 2 hours but had only done 4 km. And this is no exageration.
Fortunately, I was in a town so I took my smartphone and found a way to go back to Krk by the roads instead of the trails. Thank god for smart phones!!!
The positive thing of this traumatizing experience is all the sheeps I came across!!
They are so cute, as soon as I started approaching they stared me down and when they saw I was coming, they all ran away from me together:
And of course they bleat!! I know I've heard the sound on TV before, and I might have heard it in real life too but I don't hear that very often for sure. So that was the fun part of my morning, and there was no rain, and I managed to come back before lunch so all is well.
The plan was to bike all day but due to my episode of being lost in the morning, I had enough of biking, so I decided instead to visit the castle:
I saw a real "this"
I call it "this" because I forgot the name both in English and French :( But it was the first time I saw a real one so I was impressed. And here's one more cool picture from the castle:
My next plan was to go walk by the water until I get tired of walking and coming back, I figured this should keep me occupied for the rest of the afternoon. In order to get to the water, I had to walk in front of a church, and I heard the organ playing.
So I went inside the church and someone was playing the organ with pretty much nobody listening, so I sat down and I listened to him for about 45 minutes, until he stopped. Sometimes he was playing quietly but the pieces he played had parts where he had to play super loud. You know how church organs can get loud, and we're inside of a church, the sound was EVERYWHERE it was very impressive! I'm glad I stumbled upon this little free concert.
Finally I made it to the water side, it's funny because none of my guides about Krk mention it but it's actually quite a nice walk from downtown. At first it's all man made:
Then you get into a very nice forest which is also arranged so that you can easily walk, but still it's nice to be in the "nature" for a little while:
During the walk I had lots of fun because everything became a reason to take a picture. Good thing I'm travelling alone because I would have driven anybody crazy:
"ooooh yellow flowers"
"ooooh purple flowers"
"ooooh yellow flowers and water"
"ooooh a sail boat seen through the trees"
"ooooh a naked man... wait... what?!" I walked and walked until I reached the nudist beach of Krk! I didn't take a picture of that haha. And I decided this was a good moment to go back to where I came from ;)
So I sat by one of the rocks by the water and gave a call to my little sister because I miss her! Here's my view while I was talking to her:
The restaurant I ended up going to tonight was really awesome, for most parts. But unfortunately I cannot tell you the name, you will know why in a moment. I ordered pork and a mix of rice and vegetables which was absolutely delicious. The waiter was very happy that I spoke to him in Croatian so he brought me a free gift: a postcard! It's an advertisement postcard for the restaurant but still, it's the thought that matters.
At the end of the meal I was not in a hurry so I asked if they have tea, unfortunately they don't. So I asked for the bill but the waiter very kindly brought me a small glass of liquor made from figs. Very good although quite strong! I was busy enjoying my drink when I suddenly saw a RAT running from one end of the restaurant to the other. I SWEAR!! This was not a hallucination caused by alcohol, it really happened!!
So that's why I won't tell you the name of the restaurant, I wouldn't want to completely destroy their reputation. I don't mind that I ate there, the food was still good. But I don't think I would go again haha ;)
