I am going to keep my promise and at least have ONE post in my travel blog! I'm not sure how long I will keep it up but I like the idea that you guys read about what I do during the day, it gives me the impression that I'm not travelling alone :)
I left Ottawa on Saturday at 7 PM and arrived in Belgrade at approximately 1:30 PM the next day, local time. Here is a view of Belgrade from the plane when we landed.
I still cannot believe I am in Serbia right now... Everyone around me is speaking a foreign language, I am in heaven!! Every little thing here is fascinating, I even look very closely at every single advertisement, just because it's written in Serbian. I took a picture of the first Serbian words I saw when we stepped out of the plane: baggage claims. The most ordinary thing to see in an airport, but it becomes much more extraordinary when it's written in Serbian!
I'm really excited about absolutely everything!! You would think that it's partly because everything is new and unknown, but I also saw a few things that were quite familiar... Anybody recognizes the orange box that contains the 24 hours in Ottawa and the 24 heures in Montreal? Meet the Serbian version, 24 sata!
I can't wait for tomorrow, there was no newspaper left today (Sunday) but tomorrow I'll be able to grab one :)
So the only excitement today really was my plane flight which went somewhat well, then taking the local bus (#72 for those who want all the details) and getting out at the very last stop. I had planned my walking itinerary very well to get to my hostel but my first step was: "Have McDonald behind you and go left on Brankova Prizrenska". Well, I never found the damn McDonald's so I got lost haha but I asked a nice Serbian lady where the street I was looking for was (in Serbian), she answered something, I didn't understand anything, so I followed where her arms were pointing and I eventually managed :)
After dropping everything at the hostel, I decided to walk around and I ended up visiting a local supermarket. The lady from the counter followed me and asked me if I was looking for something in particular so I answered in broken Serbian "no I am only looking". There was an old lady next to us who overheard that little conversation. So she happily said to me "Better to be looking than fdshjglsugih fsdjflhsdfh, right?" Unfortunately I missed the most important part of what she said but I happily said "Right! and she seemed happy with my answer. I suppose we can say that I had two real conversations in Serbian today, although I still have no idea what these nice people told me!
At the supermarket, I decided to buy strange cereals and strange milk.
And the vector bars are from Canada :) The strange cereals are going to be the part one of my breakfast tomorrow. I'm also going to have burek. I know I have to buy it fresh at a bakery (pekara) but I'm not quite sure exactly what it is yet... I'll keep you guys posted!
Tonight I'm taking things easy at the hostel, it's almost 8 o'clock now and I haven't yet decided what I'm doing tomorrow so I will get going and start planning my day!
