2012-05-01 Stobreč, Split, day 31

I really felt like a real inhabitant of Split this morning, first of all because I am staying in an apartment and it's so comfortable I feel at home, but mostly because I washed my clothes and put them to dry on the washing line:

Just like a real Croatian girl :) Then I went to buy my daily burek and here I have to tell you something. If you've been reading this blog since the beginning, you already know that I first tried burek with cheese (burek sa sirom), which was good. Then my friend Miljan in Belgrade suggested I try burek with meat (bureak sa mesom) which is much better! But I discovered something even more awesome! Burek with sour cherries (burek sa višnjom). Delicious!!! I wonder if I can cook those myself at home when I'm back in Canada...

The plan today was to rent a bike and go explore toward the East. According to Wikitravel, there is a village called Stobreč close enough to bike to. On the way there, I was supposed to go through nice beaches so I figured this was a good plan. When I reached the first beach I was quite surprised because people were swimming!! It is very hot today I agree but the water is soooo cold. These people are insane!

I must admit thought that when I saw these people swim, I got quite tempted myself so I put my feet in the water for a few minutes!

I promise this is the last picture of my feet I put in this blog ;)

Going to Stobreč was fairly easy, I had to make lots of turns but I could always see the village way in front of me so I always knew I was in the good general direction. Also I was pretty much only going down so no effort :) But I did realize there was no way I could take the same way back to Split because I did so many turns that I would have gotten lost in no time. I wasn't overly worried since I figured it should be ok to take a taxi back.

The first thing I saw in Stobreč was a cute church:

But what I liked the most was the view of the water next to the huge mountains next to the village:

Then I took a little break under an umbrella and life was good!

On the way back, I knew that there was a main road that was going straight to Split and I was too cheap to pay for a taxi after all so I decided to try the main road and see how it turned out. Turned out that it was bikeable, but with some difficulties. There were cars next to me going about 70-80 km/h. I wasn't directly on the road I was actually biking on the grass next to the road but there were other bikers before me because the grass had become dirt, so it was full of holes and rocks, the cars were noisy, it was soooo hot (around 25 to 30 degrees today) so it was not a pleasant way back.

Since I was so hot, the idea of swimming did not seem that insane anymore all of sudden... So I gave back the bike, went home, changed into my bathing suit, and to the beach I went. I swam in the freezing Adriatic sea today!!! I know Croatia is famous for its amazing beaches but swimming was really not one of my priorities as part of this trip. Well, today I changed my priorities haha. I spent a good 3 hours alternating between lying in the sun and going for a short swim, catching a few minor sun burns at the same time (I really need to buy Croatian sun screen).

That was going to be the end of my stories for today but I am writing to you from a restaurant and I just got a free drink, yay! I suppose it helps that I ate here 3 times in 3 days!

One more thing before I go to bed! Following my murder story from yesterday, one of my friends asked me if Croatia was a violent country. The answer is absolutely not! There are always exceptions of course (such as the murder), but this is one of the nice things I like about Croatia and Serbia, everywhere is quite safe to walk at night even for a young lady. Many of the employees in youth hostels are girls my age and they tell me they go home after their shift around 11 PM all by themselves without any issues. I've also experienced it myself. I'm normally home by 10 but in the rare occasions when I'm out later, I've never felt I was in danger. I would qualify Ottawa as definitely more dangerous than anywhere in Serbia/Croatia I've been to so far. Not that Ottawa is terrible but I would definitely not feel safe walking absolutely anywhere after dark!
