2012-05-02 Hvar, Split, day 32

Today I had ferry tickets to go to the island of Hvar! I went inside a huge boat, so huge it didn't fit in one picture!

Actually this is the picture of another boat that I quickly took from our boat, but mine was just as big :)

2 hours later, we reached Hvar. Oh boy did I ever get bored! I can handle 9-hour bus ride to go back home from Ottawa with no problem whatsoever, but boats are soooooo boring. After 10 minutes I wanted to jump in the water and swim to Hvar instead of waiting... But anyways, we eventually did reach the island of Hvar where bus shuttles were waiting for us to take us to the city of Hvar. The island of Hvar is quite huge, I think there are about 60 km from one end to the other.

Hvar (the city) has one of the biggest square in the whole Croatia (I think maybe it is the biggest I don't remember anymore now!)

And there is also a fortress at the top of a hill, overlooking the city. here are some walls:

And a view of the fortress:

Of course I climbed all the way there. According to one tourist guide I read, it is an easy walk but going uphill. Either I'm out of shape, or I'm getting tired after travelling for 4 weeks, but in any case, I would never have described the walk as easy!

I made it alive to the top and I got rewarded with awesome views with, on one side, more islands:

On the other side, the city of Hvar:

And behind me, those nice big mountains that I so enjoy seeing:

For the very first time since I started this trip, Croatian people gave me two choices of routes and clearly indicated which one I should not take. I was shocked! Finally, some instructions!

For some reason I think my photos from today really turned out well and I would like to present you some of the ones I took throughout the day:

I read somewhere that Hvar is one of the most visited island of Croatia. There were lots of tourists today, but just as much as anywhere else. However, I saw a proof of this when I saw that sign:

When you translate the same sentences in 5 different languages, I suppose that means you're expecting lots of people from all over the world!

Unfortunately the ferries that take you to and from Hvar are not exactly frequent so I had to wait until 5:30 before heading back to Split. But I was done visiting the city of Hvar around 3:30. So I just sat down and put my feet in the water because they dramatically need a rest! And I kept my promise and will not show you a picture of my feet :) However, I will show you the nice view I had from my spot:

Before heading to the ferry, I had to wait for the shuttle that was going to take me back to the quay. I sat down next to two English girls and I thought that their accent sounded Canadian so I asked them where they were from: "Oh we're from Ottawa". I got so excited :) I said "Really!! Me too!!" So we started chatting and we ended up sitting together on the boat which made the two hours boat ride much more enjoyable! They were both really nice people I'm glad I got to meet them!

Once I got back to Split I headed straight to the restaurant for dinner with the firm intention of going to bed early since I'm going to a different city tomorrow. But I don't know why I tell myself these things because I never keep those promises :) On the way back from the restaurant, there was a big stage set up for a performance and I saw that they were getting ready (it was 8:30). I waited maybe 5 minutes and then the concert started.

They presented us a bunch of songs and dances that are typically Croatian, I got a bit bored during the dances because dancing is really not my thing but I LOVED the songs. They had songs where only men were singing, songs with only women, songs with both... All in harmony, and I love harmonies!! And all in Croatian so it was the perfect combo!! I have a few videos but videos don't seem to work for anybody so I won't put any, it doesn't sound as good when it's recorded with a phone anyways... You just have to trust my word that it was very enjoyable!

Tomorrow there's a 4 hour bus ride awaiting us, you shall see tomorrow where we will end up :)
