2012-05-21 Belgrade, day 51

Today I decided to do something fairly silly, I thought I'd go have a look at the Canadian embassy and ask if they have jobs opening. Don't worry I'm not really planning to move to Belgrade, you know I just thought I'd check, why not? On my way there, I ran into one of the minibuses that belong to the company that drove me to and from Romania and Hungary, now you'll know what they look like:

Here is the Canadian embassy in Belgrade, not very exciting as you can see:

And in case you were wondering, they don't have any job openings haha. Actually they informed me that they recently closed (or will close soon I can't remember) the Visa section at the Embassy which means that to go to Canada, people from Serbia will now have to go all the way to Vienna to get their Visa. Not very convenient!

I had lunch on the very lively Knez Milhailova street. I was enjoying my čevapi when some old lady came to talk to me. I didn't understand what she said but I think she was asking me if she could eat my leftover food whenever I was done. But since I wasn't sure I just said "I don't understand" and she left. I felt bad because I could see I wasn't going to finish my plate, so I could have shared with her whatever would be left. I saw she had walked away but she came back in my direction so when she walked next to me, I said "Would you like some bread?" Again she said something I didn't get but it sounded like "no no please finish first". So I gave her the piece of bread and I said "For you". Then she pointed at my čevapi. Well, it is true that bread on it's own is pretty boring so I cut a piece of čevapi and pointed to her that she could take it. Which she did, and then she simply helped herself and took one of my tomatoes haha. I didn't mind too much, I had a lot of them. Then she very kindly said "Thank you" and she left happily eating her bread/čevapi/tomato sandwich. It's not the first time I give something to a beggar, usually it's a little bit of money, but giving that old lady some food made me feel much better than when I give money to people on the street. You never know what they will use it for, alcohol, drug... At least this time I knew that what I gave was put to good use so I was quite happy about that! I should give food to people more often!

At 4:30 I was meeting my friend Adrijana that I hadn't seen since my first week in Belgrade at the beginning of April. I didn't know it but she brought her friend Miljan along, that's great so I got to see both of them!

We had a drink and they had to leave around 6 because they had other plans, but at least they took the time to come and see me which was extremely nice of them! I know how life is busy for everyone and I'm lucky that they were able to find a spot for me in their schedule :)

I brought a little souvenir for them from Croatia and Miljan is happily showing his, a Croatian pen:

He travels a lot for work so the reason why I gave him a pen is because he must write to me if his job ever sends him to Canada!

As you can see I didn't get a chance to get my Serbian haircut today and tomorrow I have plenty of things to do and people to see (it will be my last day in Belgrade!) so I don't know if I will be able to get my haircut... But I would like to thank my family who gave me the following suggestions to occupy my time: get a facial, get my ears pierced, get my legs waxed, and get a tattoo. Are you all crazy? I would never do any of these things in Ottawa, I'm not going to suffer in Belgrade!! But thank you for trying! :)
