2012-05-18 Budapest, day 48

Today I started my day extremely well. There is a little mini-market open 24/7 very close to my hostel room, and I have access to a fridge here. So I decided to check out what they have at the market and I bought several items that together, constituted an amazing breakfast:

It was my first glass of milk in several weeks!! I missed milk so much!

I spent my whole day hopping on and off from the tourist bus. My first stop was at Heroes square which is part of the Unesco World Heritage list.

Here I took quite a lot of pictures because I have to admit, I am really impressed by sculptures when they are well done. You saw yesterday that I took pictures of many sculptures with men on horses, well I took some more today!

If you keep walking past the heroes square, you get to a little park where you can find... a CASTLE!

I'm trying to sound dramatic because I had no idea that I was going to find a castle there so it was quite the surprise for me today! Of course, as always, I took a lot of pictures:

But I didn't go inside because it now hosts the Museum of Agriculture. Even though I work for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, I really don't care about agriculture and I decided that my time was going to be better spent outside.

My next stop was a pit stop to change from the red line to the yellow line and to have lunch. I ate and when I checked what time my next yellow bus was going to be, I realized that yellow buses run every hour instead of every half hour like the other line. And of course I had missed the previous one by 10 minutes... I looked at my map and saw that the synagogue was close by. I saw it already but I had promised myself I would come back to visit the interior and I figured this was my chance!

It was cute because all men were required to wear the little jewish hat before entering the synagogue!

Here I'm going to cheat and show you someone else's pictures because mine are not so good.

The interior was SO beautiful. I think I am getting used to seeing all those churches with impressive altars but this was a synagogue so things were arranged a bit differently and I was very impressed with how it looked. I had never been inside a synagogue so one more thing to check from my not written yet bucket list.

I would have stayed longer because there's a few more things to see where the synagogue is but I wanted to make sure I would be back on time for my bus. On my way back to the bus stop, I ran into the two Dannish girls from yesterday. I quickly said hi and I kept going not to be late. And 5 minutes later I ran into the Canadian guy that I met yesterday during the free guided tour. Strange coincidence!

My next stop was on the other side of the Danube, facing the parliament

There were three churches around that area, the first one was not very impressive from the outside but the inside was quite something:

I couldn't steal anybody's picture this time so you're stuck with my blurry shot :)

The second church was not bad from the outside but not so good inside, so not worth showing really.

And the third one was very good from the outside but it was locked so I couldn't go inside:

After that, the bus dropped me right next to the parliament. You saw from the previous picture how impressive it looks from afar. And now let me show you what it looks like when you're right next to it:

Needless to say, this is just a sample of all the pictures I took, I have many more on my phone. I would be a good paparazzi ;)

And finally after a very very unrelaxing day of constant walking, I was on my way back to the hostel but I ran into a concert! It was part of the Református zenei fesztivál. Don't ask me what's it's all about, I have no idea! But it's from May 18 to 20 so I might go again tomorrow!

And to finish this post, a few extra pictures taken at some point during the day:

A sculpture located near the parliament:

The museum of applied arts:

And more pictures to come tomorrow I'm sure!
