2012-05-07 Sarajevo, day 37

Sarajevo is so much fun!!!!

But let me start from the beginning. I left Croatia this morning and this is a proof that I'm slowly getting a little closer to the end of my trip. Today the destination was Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. On my way to Sarajevo, I saw something that I hadn't seen in a while, look at the next picture and try to guess what it is:

Snow!! The mountains are so high that there is snow at the top. Good thing the bus didn't drive us there, I don't mind seeing snow right now but I prefer when it's from a distance!

The bus ride was interesting today because I knew at what time we were leaving (8 AM) but I had no idea at what time we were arriving. Turns it was 2:30 PM, so 6.5 hours bus ride to get from Dubrovnik to Sarajevo. What a nice rest, I loved it :)

Unfortunately, it was pouring rain in Sarajevo when I arrived so instead of walking around as much as I would have liked, I ended up going to the Sarajevo Museum which was very interesting! They were presenting several different crafts performed in the city of Sarajevo that have been preserved from generations to generations over the years:

After that I went back to the hostel because there is no point making myself soaked since I only have one pair of shoes. But luckily the rain stopped around 6:30 PM so I went out again and walked some more.

I really love Sarajevo!! I think one of the things I like about it is that it is different from Croatia :) I loved Croatia a lot and except for one place, I have no regret and I'm happy that I saw all the places I've been to. But it is very refreshing to see something that is not similar to what I've been used to in Croatia.

The first thing I noticed when we entered Bosnia is that their houses look differently. Not all of them have the orange roof (some of them are darker), and even the way the houses are built look a bit different to me (but my observations skills being null, I may be wrong here). I don't really have much houses pictures except those two

Second difference, there are mosques!

I think there was a few in Croatia too but I didn't really take pictures of them. Here they are everywhere!

And finally, I'm seeing many many things written in Arabic:

I think this is all very neat!

When the rain stopped and I went walking, I got all the way to the bridge where Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated, along with his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg on June 28, 1914.

As you know, this assassination was the starting point of the World War I. I was looking at the bridge thinking "Wow, this is something I learnt in high school. I would never have thought that I would set foot at the exact place where Franz Ferdinand was assassinated". How amazing life is sometimes :)

Here are two more pictures from Sarajevo, I can't wait to discover this city a little bit more tomorrow!
