I fell in love!
No, I did not meet a special person... I met a special city! I fell in love with Budapest!
My ride came to pick me up from Belgrade at 9 and everything went well because I slept most of the way. The only traumatizing part was crossing the border. I've crossed so many borders now that I don't panic anymore but this time they were questionning everybody very seriously: "Where are you coming from?", "How much money are you carrying?", "For what reason were you in Belgrade?" I can't say it was scary but almost. I was still trying to mentally count how much money I had with me when my turn arrived but the policeman did not ask that question to me. I was happy that I didn't have to answer but on the other hand, does that mean I look like a poor person or what??
We arrived at my hostel around 3:30 PM, which means we were on the road for about 6 hours. Long drive but oh so worth it! I spent the rest of the day walking in Budapest with no specific destination in mind. The problem with Budapest is that everything is so beautiful that you can never turn around to go back home, every corner you turn, every street has more awesome buildings than the previous one and you are forced to always keep going to see what's next!
Budapest is built on both sides of the Danube. Actually there used to be two cities on the East of the Danube called Buda and Óbuda (which apparently means "Old Buda") and a city on the West called Pest. They were unified in 1873 and now the city is called Budapest. It is the capital of Hungary and in Hungarian language, it's pronounced Budapesht.
I only stayed in the Pest part today and I feel like I have seen a very tiny portion of all the amazing things there is to see here. So imagine, I have another side of the Danube to discover after that! I don't know if I will have time to see everything I want in the 3 days I have left here!
Today I saw streets filled with buildings having amazing architectures
A HUGE indoor market place
One of the most impressive churches I have seen so far.
I had to stop and admire it for quite some time. I guess I'm tired because I almost teared up looking at it. I know you're laughing at me now :)
Usually pictures of doors are for my mom but this one, I took it for both her and I. I don't care about doors usually but this one is so neat!
Here is a picture of me with some random statue:
Let me show you a silly pictures now :)
Starbucks!!! I hadn't seen you in soooooo long!! I missed you so much!!
Ok now one question to which nobody has the answer... Where the heck did Hungarian language come from?? It is insanely different from everything I have seen and every single time I see a sign or something I am always amazed by the fact that I don't understand even one single word:
Hungarian is also a very complicated language. I will give you a little comparison with Serbian so that you know what I mean. Serbian language has a concept called "cases" that does not exist in English. Depending on the role of the word in the sentence, the ending of the word changes. For example, the word Voda meaning water will be spelt differently whether you say "the water is calm" or "I want water".
declension of voda
singular | plural | |
---|---|---|
nominative | voda | vode |
genitive | vode | voda |
dative | vodi | vodama |
accusative | vodu | vode |
vocative | vodo | vode |
locative | vodi | vodama |
instrumental | vodom | vodama |
It gets very complicated when I try to talk because every time I have to stop and think "Ok, this noun is in which case? Is the noun feminine, masculine or neutral? Singular or plural? What is the case ending then?" And of course on top of all that there are exceptions.
I thought Serbian was complicated, but have a look at the case table of a random Hungarian word:

If anybody ever hears me say "I would like to try to learn Hungarian", PLEASE hit me on the head until I change my mind!!!
