2012-05-11 Belgrade, day 41

This morning I was really looking forward to buy my burek and see if the lady behind the counter would recognize me because that's where I used to go every day at the beginning of my trip! Unfortunately when I arrived the place was packed with people and another lady that I hadn't seen before answered me. I was a little nervous because there was a lot of people waiting and I didn't want to slow everybody down by not understanding the questions that were asked but I understood everything fairly easily and paid and left with no problems. I can see the improvement in my language skills since the beginning of my trip!

I decided to go eat my burek in front of the Danube. On the way there, I walked by the street Knez Milhailova which is one of my favourite streets in Belgrade, for pedestrians only with lots of shops, always full of people and interesting things to see. Someone was selling used book and I saw a Serbian version of Lucky Luke that I decided to buy. I've been resisting this kind of purchase since I started my trip because I wasn't sure how my budget was going to be, but now that I'm toward the end and I see everything is ok with my bank account, I'm starting to think of souvenirs to bring back.

After that I walked toward the Danube and I stopped again because I saw someone I knew! When I was in Sarajevo, I told you about the tour that I did with a guide. There were two other people with me on that tour, a couple from Holland. Well this morning they were walking on Knez Milhailova street while I was there so I said hi! We already knew that we were all going to Belgrade but the city is very big, so I was honestly not expecting to see them again! We walked together a little bit but then we split because they wanted to see the Kalemegdan fortress while I wanted to sit down and eat.

I really wasn't in the mood to walk around all day so after my burek, I decided that reading my Serbian Lucky Luke was a good activity. I read the whole thing and I would be curious to read it in English or French to finally understand what the story is all about haha :)

After Lucky Luke, I walked back to my hostel and had a one-hour chat with the lady who works there. I talked to her a lot the first week I was in Belgrade and she added me on Facebook so we kept contact while I was in Croatia. To me, she's a good friend now so I wanted to spend some time to chat with her while I'm here!

Then it was time for lunch, so I walked to Skardarska street. You probably don't remember because it was a while ago but it's the nice cobbled street in Belgrade where they have lots of cute restaurants. I sat down, ordered and I was waiting for my food when all of a sudden there comes the couple from Holland again! I asked them if they had eaten lunch already and they said no so I invited them to join me, which they did. It was so nice!! We chatted during lunch, and after eating they were apparently not in a hurry to discover Belgrade because they stayed and chatted with me until 3 PM. After that they had to go to meet one of their friends so we split again, but we got to exchange e-mails, I'll let them know if I go to Amsterdam one of these days!

The rest of the afternoon was very quiet, I went shopping with the firm intention of buying stuff for my friends and family back home but I ended up buying books for myself haha.

I saw these beautiful dragons that I soooooooo wanted to buy but I guess I'm not at the age of buying dragons anymore so I resisted the temptation... but I think I will end up bringing one of them back home:

I saw this book which might help me understand crazy Serbian people haha but I decided it was too expensive so I didn't buy it:

While walking around, I saw a guy with a real live snake around his neck! Scary!!

So in the end I bought myself 2 books for kids, one book from a Serbian author about stories about Belgrade (I think haha, I'm not even 100% sure), one book by John Grisham that I already have in English at home (so I can read both versions at the same time and learn more words and expressions in Serbian!) and a Serbian National Geographic magazine :)

I'll buy things for my family and friends some other time ;) By the way if you have special requests of things you'd like me to bring back feel free to let me know in the comments or by e-mail, it helps when I know what to get!
