2012-05-10 Belgrade, day 40

Guess who is back in Belgrade???? It's meeeeeeeeeee!!! :D

It feels like I just came back home :) I walk on familiar streets, I will sleep in a familiar hostel, I see familiar people. I'm very happy to be here!

I was going to take the bus from Sarajevo to Belgrade but at the last second, I found a company that offers rides "door-to-door" from Sarajevo to Belgrade so I booked a ride with them for this morning. They said they would come and pick me up at 11, so I really took my time in the morning and I went for a little walk. I saw some souvenirs that I wanted to take a picture of because I didn't mention it to you yet but Sarajevo has lots of "Fleur de lys" all over the place, just like in Québec:

Here's the Québec flag for those who don't know, so that you understand my "fleur de lys" reference:

But then the lady told me "now that you took a picture you could buy something!" Damn I couldn't refuse that! So I bought one of her wooden thing with a letter that you see at the top right. I picked the letter C, guess I was feeling egoistic in the morning :)

The guy from the ride sent me a text at 10:05 to say (in serbian) "I will be at your door in 10 minutes, please confirm". My brain went right away in panic mode because I had been walking around for the past 30 minutes. Thankfully I had not been walking in a straight line and thankfully I had enough energy to run, so I made it back at 10:15 and he arrived approximately 2 minutes later. I would've been in trouble missing that ride!

So the whole idea of taking this ride would have been smart normally because driving takes less time then the bus. However, since it's "door-to-door", he was picking up everybody where they were and I was #2 out of 6, so the guy drove around quite some time before actually leaving Sarajevo. And unfortunately, I ended up being the last person dropped as well. So in total, I spent a good 8 hours in that car, I don't think I saved much time compared to the bus.

The nice thing though is that I got to see places I wouldn't have seen by bus, located in random neighbourhoods of both Sarajevo and Belgrade. I've seen this church in Sarajevo:

I saw this cute church located god knows where between Sarajevo and Belgrade:

And in Belgrade, we drove past two very nice temples that I don't remember seeing before. If anybody knows where these temples are located exactly please inform me, I'd like to go again to check the inside:

I must say though that I saw something from Belgrade that disappointed me a little:

From the picture, it actually looks like a pile of junk... But people live there! I would have thought Belgrade would treat it's inhabitants a bit better by providing them real living spaces... I highly doubt they have any kind of heating in those "houses". I cannot judge because I don't live there myself but it honestly looks barely better than living on the street. I felt very sorry for these people.

When I finally arrived at the hostel I rushed out immediately because my friend Jelena (that I met when I first arrived in Belgrade a month and a half ago) was waiting for me. I was sooooo happy to get together with her again, it was like seeing an old friend I haven't seen in a while :) We walked around town which was really fun, I saw my favourite streets and the beautiful fortress in Belgrade again. We had a drink and she had to pay for me because since I rushed out to join her, I totally forgot that the only money I had on me was Bosnian. Oops!

Good thing I got to spend the evening with Jelena otherwise I would have had a pretty boring day, sitting in that car pretty much the whole time!
