2012-05-12 Timișoara, day 42

Remember the picture of a dragon I showed you yesterday? After I posted that picture on Facebook, everybody told me that I had to go get it. So this morning the very first thing I did was to go buy my dragon, yay! I feel a little immature right now with my stuffed animal following me around but I'm soooo happy!! I had even given him a name before I buying him haha so I suppose it proves I really wanted him. His name is Dragan because it's a Serbian name and it sounds like "Dragon" :)

Today I was traveling to a different city again. Honestly, I don't even have enough words to tell you how excited I am!! You see, I've known for quite a long time that I was going to go to Europe for two months and I knew I was going to go to Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia. But as you saw, I came back to Belgrade a bit earlier than what was planned so I had more time to discover other places. When I found the minibus company that drove me from Sarajevo to Belgrade, I saw that the same company offers rides from Belgrade to Timișoara in Romania. I had never heard of that place before but I decided to Google it and saw a few pictures that were quite nice so I thought well why not go spend a few days there? It's been only a few days since I know I was going to come here, and I didn't get a chance to get used to the idea that I would be in Romania so today I spent the whole day saying to myself "Oh my god! I'm in ROMANIA!!!!"

On the way there, we drove through cute Serbian towns and I'm so sad because I saw very nice churches but the window next to me was tiny so I caught just parts of churches :(

Well, you can imagine the rest in your head I suppose :)

When I arrived here, the guy working at the hostel was trying to find a map for me but he didn't find anything. There was a girl in the social area and apparently she was leaving soon so the guy asked if I could get her map and she happily gave it to me. We chatted a little, she's from China and she lives in the US now, so I told her I'm from Ottawa and she said "Really! I'll be in Ottawa in November for a conference!" Since she doesn't know anybody in Ottawa I gave her my e-mail address and told her to let me know when she would be in my city so that I can give her a tour, she was quite happy about that. Yay one more friend :)

Romanian language is so strange for me! It's a roman language so there are lots of similarities with French, actually sometimes I feel like I'm in a French country who doesn't know how to spell:

My last comment works better if you know French haha but if you don't, these things written above are the same in French but spelt differently.

One of the architectural beauties I saw here is the following church:

I think it would have been worth coming here just to see that church! I don't think the picture can show you how nice looking it is, I'll try to take it again under 10 000 different angles tomorrow until I find the perfect shot ;)

Here are a few more pictures from Timișoara:

At one point I saw a few girls doing a sound check for a concert and it sounded very nice. I sat down next to a lady who was the mother of one of the girls and fortunately she spoke English so I was able to ask her what time the concert started. She said 6 o'clock, I looked at my watch and it was 5 so I thought "Ok I'll have a very quick dinner and come back for that concert!" So I got up and left. On my way to a restaurant I took one picture and saw from the corner of my eye that my phone said it was already 6 o'clock. Seems like Romania is not in the same time zone as Serbia and nobody thought of informing me! So I probably looked very silly when I came back to sit down for the concert but it's ok, at least I didn't miss it! From what I understood (and I surprisingly understood a lot, the announcer spoke super slowly and there are many words similar to French), they were students who were presenting a little classical music concert. It was very pretty!

After the concert I was starving and tired and I didn't care anymore what kind of restaurant I was going to end up in. I saw a restaurant where the menu was both in Romanian and Serbian so I went in. The lady said something and honestly my mind went completely blank. I suppose she said "good evening" but I didn't understand, I didn't know what to answer, so I just stupidly looked at her with question marks in my eyes. She saw that I was quite disoriented so she said "Dobro veče!" instead and my mind came back to life. I can understand that, this is Serbian!

So from what I understand, I ended up in a Serbian restaurant in Romania haha. The waiters spoke in Serbian and the music was in Serbian. So I was able to order my meal in Serbian, and I thought it was quite ironic how relieved I was that I could speak Serbian instead of Romanian. I don't know how I ended up feeling comfortable in that language!

I'm now looking forward to tomorrow to try the local Romanian cuisine because tonight the meal was quite similar to what I've been eating before during this trip :)
